Nicks realisation that yes! pilates rocks!

I used to think Pilates was a fad. It could be intimidating, especially being a guy. Until I started using the equipment in my Physio sessions. It was a great gateway to getting people stronger without aggravating injuries.

Especially when we could take out the big lifting heavy muscles and work the smaller postural muscles that hold our joints together. Watching big strong people shake all over was crazy.

What was even crazier was the immediate change in spinal alignment, posture and muscles that hold you together.

When I was “forced” to take the “brolates” Pilates class and see how a bunch of guys could suddenly grow some glutes and get a very strong core in a few weeks was impressive.

Feeling ease in day to day life was a bonus. Doing work all day in the garden would usually cause me to suffer but that stopped happening. I felt stronger at Jiu jitsu.

I used to think my shoulders would always hurt from Physio. It was just part of the job. But they’ve just stopped hurting. It sort of crept up on me. 7 years ago my shoulder was terrible and despite no direct attempt to rehab them it feels normal, and despite 3 shoulder reconstructions it’s the best it’s ever felt simply from adding Pilates.

I looked at the research behind Pilates and in randomised controlled trials (gold standard evidence) it has been shown to be effective in the management of

Low Back Pain (acute and long term)

Knee Osteoarthritis

Neck Pain

Shoulder Pain

I’m sold. Charlotte was right there is something to Pilates and it is incredible for anyone sick of niggles, low grade pain or feeling they are always twisted.
